WASHINGTON — The United States marked the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence on Saturday with military flyovers, concerts and a fireworks display on the National Mall that organizers billed as the largest in history, although punishing heat and a severe thunderstorm disrupted celebrations in the capital and beyond.

The July 4 holiday commemorates the adoption of the Declaration by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia in 1776. This year’s observance capped months of semiquincentennial programming across the country.

Storm Forces Evacuation

Organizers ordered the National Mall cleared on Saturday evening as storms gathered near Washington, directing visitors to shelter in nearby museums and federal buildings. National Guard troops helped move crowds toward exits, though some attendees lingered. A spokesperson for Freedom 250, the organization staging the event, said updates would be shared on programming and the reopening of gates.

After a delay of a couple of hours, the program resumed. President Donald Trump addressed the crowd, telling supporters that “the American dream is back,” before the fireworks began. The evening included a flyover by the new Air Force One escorted by F-22 Raptor fighter jets and a performance by the 122-piece Joint Armed Forces Orchestra and Chorus.

Freedom 250 said the display involved about 850,000 shells launched from ten sites along the Mall and the Potomac River. The finale concluded at around 1 a.m. local time.

Heat Cancels Events

Temperatures in Washington reached about 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday. The heat wave gripping the East Coast forced the cancellation of the National Park Service’s Independence Day parade in Washington on Friday, and other events were canceled or temporarily closed in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Colorado. Signs at the Great American State Fair on the Mall advised visitors to leave the area shortly after 7 p.m.

Philadelphia and Beyond

In Philadelphia, the city where the Declaration was adopted, hundreds of visitors gathered at Independence Hall in sweltering conditions. The National Park Service hosted a morning Celebration of Freedom ceremony on Independence Mall, and the city staged an evening concert on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway followed by fireworks over the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Members of Congress had gathered at Independence Hall earlier in the week.

The holiday coincided with the FIFA World Cup, which the United States is co-hosting this summer. A knockout-round match between France and Paraguay was played in Philadelphia, and opened with commemorations of the anniversary.

Communities nationwide also took part in “America’s Block Party,” a bipartisan America 250 initiative encouraging local gatherings, alongside traditional parades, picnics and municipal fireworks shows.
