SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 18 (TodayViralUSA) — An Air Force service member assigned to a special warfare training unit died after falling while rappelling from the Alamodome rafters during a pregame ceremony ahead of the University of Texas at San Antonio’s football game against Navy on Saturday night, officials said.

Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada confirmed that the airman, assigned to Detachment 2 of the 6th Combat Training Squadron, died at a local hospital from injuries sustained in the fall. The service member’s identity has not been released. The Air Force said the incident remains under investigation.

Fall during Salute to Armed Forces night

The airman was one of four military members scheduled to rappel from the stadium ceiling as part of UTSA’s annual Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans pregame ceremony. Witnesses and local reporting described an uncontrolled descent roughly halfway down the rope before the service member hit the field hard near midfield, with a band nearby and fans already in the stands.

Stadium staff and medical personnel treated the injured airman on the field for several minutes before he was taken away. The San Antonio Fire Department said it transported a Priority 1 patient — a designation for a life-threatening emergency — to a hospital. Kickoff was delayed by about 10 minutes; the game still went ahead, and UTSA won 38–34 before a crowd of more than 23,000.

“You could tell the energy was just gone,” UTSA Coach Jeff Traylor told reporters afterward. “It just really puts things in perspective. It really does.”

Unit trains battlefield air controllers

Detachment 2, which operates from Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis and is part of a squadron headquartered at Nellis, runs selection and initial training for airmen seeking to qualify as Tactical Air Control Party specialists. Those airmen embed with Army and Marine units and help direct aircraft and artillery from forward ground positions; rope descents are part of their training repertoire.

UT San Antonio said it was “deeply saddened” by the incident and was activating wellbeing services for students, faculty and staff who may have been affected. San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones said she was “deeply saddened” and offered prayers for the family. The American Conference said it was working with member schools, the Alamodome and local authorities to review what happened.
