NEW YORK, Nov. 5 (TodayViralUSA) — Six people died and seven others were injured when a fast-moving fire tore through a two-story home in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood early Thursday, the Fire Department of New York said.

Heavy fire was reported in the row-frame building on the 600 block of 58th Street at about 1:40 a.m. More than 200 first responders — and, by some accounts, more than 230 fire and EMS personnel — answered the three-alarm blaze. It was brought under control in about three hours.

Four dead at the scene

Four people died at the scene, the department said. Two others with critical injuries were taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead. Four people suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and three firefighters sustained minor injuries. No names or ages of the victims have been released.

“Upon arrival, we had fire on every floor,” Kevin Woods, the department’s chief of fire operations, said at a news conference near the charred wood home. “Fire blowing out every window, meeting us at the front door.”

Firefighters rescued four people, including two trapped behind window bars whom crews reached through a rear entrance, Woods said. The fire collapsed the second floor and staircase and spread to a neighboring building; eight neighbors were displaced and taken to hotels, and the city’s Department of Buildings ordered a third damaged home vacated, local outlets reported.

Lithium-ion battery under review

Fire marshals were investigating the cause. A lithium-ion battery was found at the scene, but officials said it was not yet clear whether it sparked the blaze. A hazmat team was requested because of the batteries, FOX 5 New York reported. The tragedy came about a week after a deadly fire at the Patterson Houses in the Bronx that officials said was sparked by a lithium-ion battery and killed a mother and her three children.

“This was a devastating fire,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at the news conference. “It will take a long time for this neighborhood to mourn the neighbors they lost this morning and to recover from this immense grief.”
