WASHINGTON, Oct. 22 (TodayViralUSA) — Calley Means, a senior adviser to Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and one of the chief architects of the “Make America Healthy Again” movement, resigned from the Trump administration on Thursday, the latest sign of friction between the movement and the White House less than two weeks before the midterm elections.
Means did not give a reason for leaving. In a statement he also posted on X, he said he was departing “with tremendous respect for President Trump and RFK — two historic figures who are committed to confronting a corrupt DC bureaucracy that is doing everything possible to protect the status quo.”
Frustration over food policy
A person familiar with his decision told NBC News that Means had grown increasingly frustrated with how little he could accomplish, and that the final straw was the lack of progress on a federal definition of ultraprocessed foods, one of his top priorities. The administration teased the definition in August but has yet to release it; Bloomberg Law reported that a white paper outlining the approach has sat at the White House for months after food industry executives pushed to stop the rollout.
The source also pointed to Trump’s executive order to boost domestic supply of glyphosate, the main ingredient in the weed killer Roundup, and to Environmental Protection Agency actions that clashed with Kennedy’s agenda, including weaker mercury emissions standards and rolled-back drinking water limits for some PFAS chemicals.
A key bridge between Trump and Kennedy
Means advised Kennedy’s 2024 presidential campaign and helped arrange the call between the two men shortly after the assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, a conversation that contributed to Kennedy’s endorsement, according to The Washington Post. He joined the White House early last year as a special government employee and later became a full-time senior adviser at the Department of Health and Human Services after divesting from his wellness company, Truemed.
His exit comes as other MAHA supporters, including former Kennedy campaign aides, have accused the administration of breaking promises on food, agriculture and environmental health. Separately, more than 90 scientists and nutritionists are preparing to urge the White House budget office to release the draft ultraprocessed food policy “without further delay,” Bloomberg Law reported.
