STOCKHOLM, Oct. 8 (TodayViralUSA) — Anne Carson, the Canadian poet, essayist and translator whose work fuses ancient Greek myth with modern verse and prose, has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Swedish Academy announced Thursday.

The academy cited Carson “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.” The prize carries an award of 12 million Swedish kronor, or roughly $1.2 million.

News reached her in Iceland

Ingrid Carlberg, the academy’s permanent secretary, said she reached Carson by phone shortly before the public announcement. Carson, she said, told her she was in Iceland, “listening to the wind,” and was surprised but “very happy.”

Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson lives in Michigan and has held Icelandic citizenship since 2022, the BBC reported. She has taught classics at universities in the United States and Canada for more than three decades.

Between the philologist and the poet

Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel Committee for Literature, said nearly all of Carson’s writing sits at “the intersection between the philologist’s obsession with words and the poet’s desire for new meaning.” He praised her for moving beyond lyric poetry centered on the narrative self, producing playful and ironic works that cross between genres and art forms.

Her breakthrough, the 1998 “Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse,” retells the myth of Geryon, the red-winged monster slain by Heracles, recasting him as a gentle young man who falls in love with a careless Heracles. The long poem is framed by a scholarly meditation on the ancient Greek poet Stesichorus.

Her other widely read books include “The Glass Essay,” “The Beauty of the Husband: A Fictional Essay in 29 Tangos,” “Nox,” an elegy for her brother presented as a folding book, and “Float.”

Translations and the stage

Carson is also known for translations that give ancient drama a contemporary edge. Her 2021 “The Trojan Women: A Comic” reimagined Euripides as a graphic work, and her version of Sophocles’ “Elektra” was staged in London last year with Brie Larson in the title role. Her 2019 performance piece “Norma Jeane Baker of Troy” paired Helen of Troy with Marilyn Monroe.

Olsson said her collaborations with visual artists, choreographers and opera and theater directors reflect the freedom with which she approaches literary conventions, and that her work has carried outsize importance for international art and literature since the 1990s.

Carson joins short-story writer Alice Munro, honored in 2013, among Canadian winners of the literature prize. The award is given for a writer’s lifetime body of work and is widely regarded as the most prestigious honor in world literature.
