‘Other Mommy’ Scares Up $27.5 Million Box Office Win as Sorkin’s ‘The Social Reckoning’ Stumbles

Universal’s horror film Other Mommy opened at No. 1 at the North American box office with an estimated $27.5 million, overcoming harsh reviews, while Aaron Sorkin’s Facebook drama The Social Reckoning fell well short of expectations with a $5.5 million debut.

Horror wins despite the critics

Directed by Rob Savage and produced by James Wan’s Atomic Monster with Blumhouse, Other Mommy stars Oscar winner Jessica Chastain in dual roles as a mother and her monstrous double. The film averaged $8,172 across 3,365 theaters, according to studio estimates.

The result came despite an 18% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and a rare “D+” CinemaScore from opening-day audiences. Analysts credited Universal’s marketing campaign and widely shared trailers for driving interest beyond core genre fans. The film added $17.7 million from 50 international markets for a global start of $45.2 million.

A muted reckoning for Sorkin

Sony’s The Social Reckoning, written and directed by Sorkin as a pointed look at Facebook, opened in fifth place from 2,606 theaters. Pre-release tracking had pointed to a debut of $7 million to $8 million. The film earned about $3.5 million from 29 overseas markets for a $9 million worldwide opening.

The figure is a fraction of the $22.4 million debut of Sorkin’s The Social Network in 2010, which went on to become an awards-season favorite.

The rest of the chart

Last weekend’s leader, Verity, slipped to second with $11.5 million, a 64% drop, lifting its domestic total to $53.9 million. Resident Evil placed third with $8.4 million and has now earned $138.5 million, while Paramount’s Brad Pitt-led Heart of the Beast took fourth with $7.1 million. Tom Cruise satire Digger fell 60% in its second weekend to $3.2 million.

Overall weekend receipts totaled about $85.2 million, down 15.6% from the previous frame but roughly 19% ahead of the same weekend in 2025. Studios are counting on upcoming releases including Street Fighter, Whalefall and DC’s Clayface to lift October attendance.
