VANDENBERG SPACE FORCE BASE, Calif., Oct. 10 (TodayViralUSA) — SpaceX lofted 21 data-transport satellites for the U.S. Space Force on Saturday morning, completing the fourth of nine planned Falcon 9 flights that will assemble the initial warfighting layer of the Pentagon’s proliferated low-Earth-orbit mesh network.
The Falcon 9 lifted off from Vandenberg at 3:39 a.m. EDT (12:39 a.m. Pacific; 0739 GMT), five days after an aborted countdown on Oct. 5 that SpaceX has not explained. The first-stage booster, designated B1103 on its sixth flight, returned to a Vandenberg landing zone a little more than seven minutes after liftoff.
The spacecraft belong to the Space Development Agency’s Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture, which SpaceX describes as an optically linked constellation for global military tactical communications and missile warning, indication and tracking.
Building Tranche 1
Saturday’s mission was the fourth Transport Layer flight in Tranche 1, the SDA’s “initial warfighting capability” tranche. Tranche 1 is planned to include 154 operational satellites in low Earth orbit — 126 data-transport spacecraft and 28 missile-tracking vehicles — plus four missile-defense test satellites with higher-fidelity infrared sensors.
Eighty-four of the 126 data-transport satellites have now reached orbit, all on Falcon 9s that flew from Vandenberg in September 2025, October 2025, July 2026 and today. SpaceX is contracted for nine Tranche 1 launches in total. The agency says it will refresh the architecture in new “tranches” about every two years under a spiral-development model.
SpaceX ended its webcast shortly after booster touchdown at the SDA’s request, so confirmation of satellite deployment was pending. The flight was the company’s 111th Falcon 9 mission of 2026; more than 70% of those launches have expanded Starlink, which now exceeds 11,000 satellites.
Strategic backdrop
The proliferated architecture is designed to make U.S. space communications and missile warning harder to disrupt by spreading capability across hundreds of relatively inexpensive satellites rather than a handful of large, high-value spacecraft. Defense officials have framed the mesh as a response to growing threats to traditional space assets from China and Russia.
Northrop Grumman builds the data-transport satellites for this layer. Further Tranche 1 flights are scheduled through the coming months as the SDA pushes toward initial operational capability for the warfighter network.
