SpaceX to Buy Grain’s Nationwide 800 MHz Spectrum Portfolio for Starlink Mobile

WASHINGTON, Oct. 11 (TodayViralUSA) — SpaceX has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Grain Management’s nationwide 800 MHz wireless spectrum portfolio, a low-band footprint the companies say will power Starlink Mobile’s hybrid satellite-and-terrestrial service, subject to Federal Communications Commission approval.

Grain, a digital-infrastructure investment firm, announced the deal on Oct. 8, saying SpaceX will take 100% of the 800 MHz holdings Grain assembled after purchasing the spectrum from T-Mobile in August 2026. Financial terms were not disclosed. Closing remains contingent on FCC transfer approval and customary conditions.

Low-band spectrum around 800 MHz travels farther and penetrates buildings better than higher frequencies, making it prized for wide-area mobile coverage. SpaceX plans to pair the terrestrial licenses with Starlink’s satellite network for direct-to-device connectivity that can reach customers from ground towers and from orbit.

From T-Mobile sale to SpaceX

“For nearly twenty years, we have built Grain to see opportunity where others see complexity,” said David Grain, the firm’s founder and chief executive. “This agreement with SpaceX brings that capability to bear at extraordinary scale, with the potential to change where and how Americans connect.”

Grain acquired the 800 MHz portfolio from T-Mobile in a swap that also involved Grain’s 600 MHz spectrum and cash. An FCC order in July 2026 approving that earlier transfer set a competitive selection process and a conditional path for direct-to-device satellite deployment — a framework Grain says the SpaceX sale advances by putting the licenses toward integrated satellite-terrestrial networks.

Industry coverage has framed the purchase as a challenge to AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon in the race to blend satellite links with conventional mobile service, though SpaceX still needs regulatory clearance and network buildout before consumers see commercial Starlink Mobile offers that rely on the 800 MHz band.

What comes next

BDT & MSD Partners advised Grain financially; Milbank and Latham & Watkins handled legal and regulatory work. The FCC will review whether the transfer serves the public interest, including competition and coverage goals the commission highlighted when it cleared Grain’s earlier acquisition.

If approved, the deal would give Elon Musk’s company a scarce nationwide low-band asset at a moment when satellite direct-to-device partnerships are reshaping wireless strategy across the industry. Carriers and tower operators are watching closely for signals on how SpaceX intends to deploy terrestrial infrastructure alongside its constellation.
