WASHINGTON, Oct. 20 (TodayViralUSA) — The Trump administration has revoked more than 300,000 U.S. visas since President Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025, the State Department said Tuesday, a figure that points to a sharp acceleration in cancellations as the government presses ahead with its immigration crackdown two weeks before the midterm elections.
“With over 300,000 revocations, the Trump administration has revoked more visas at a faster pace than any administration in history,” State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said, according to the New York Post, which first reported the total.
Crimes, fraud and birth tourism
A department official told Al Jazeera that the “vast majority” of revocations were tied to criminal activity, public-safety concerns, immigration violations, fraud or misrepresentation, or other information showing a person was no longer eligible to hold a visa.
Of the visas pulled for criminal or public-safety reasons, 25% involved assault and related crimes and 22% involved driving under the influence, the official said. Theft accounted for 7%, and substance abuse or distribution for another 7%.
More than 4,000 of the revocations targeted foreign nationals who “engaged in or facilitated birth tourism,” the practice of traveling to the United States to give birth so a child gains U.S. citizenship, according to the department.
“We have zero tolerance for foreigners here on visas who break the law, commit fraud or undermine our national security,” Pigott wrote on X.
A rising tally
The department said in January that it had revoked more than 100,000 visas, then a record. It has not disclosed the nationalities of those affected, the New York Post reported.
The administration has also tightened visa rules more broadly, expanding social media vetting and other screening for applicants. Rights advocates and legal experts have criticized the social media checks, arguing they threaten free speech and single out immigrants for surveillance.
Immigration remains one of the defining issues of the Nov. 3 midterms, alongside the cost of living and Trump’s approval ratings, as Republicans seek to defend narrow majorities in the House and Senate.
