LOS ANGELES (TodayViralUSA) — Walter Koenig, the actor who played Ensign Pavel Chekov, the Russian navigator aboard the starship Enterprise in the original “Star Trek” series and seven feature films, has died. He was 90.

Koenig died Sunday night, Oct. 25, at his home in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles, his talent representative, Zachery McGinnis, said in a statement reported by CBS News and The Associated Press. He was surrounded by his daughter and niece.

A Cold War-era symbol of cooperation

Chekov was the only member of the Enterprise bridge crew from what was then the Communist bloc. Played with a heavy Russian accent, fierce pride, a love of poetry and unwavering loyalty, the character signaled the show’s optimistic vision of rival nations working side by side in the future.

“Star Trek” aired on NBC from 1966 to 1969 but found a remarkable second life as devoted fans kept it alive, spawning films, spinoff series and conventions that still draw thousands. Koenig reprised Chekov in seven “Star Trek” movies beginning in 1979 and wrote a book about the experience, “Chekov’s Enterprise,” published in 1980.

Writer, teacher and sci-fi regular

Born in Chicago on Sept. 14, 1936, Koenig graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1958 and studied acting at New York’s Neighborhood Playhouse. He landed early television roles in the 1960s on shows including “Mr. Novak” and “Ben Casey.”

After “Star Trek,” he kept acting while writing scripts for series such as “Family” and “The Incredible Hulk,” and taught part time at UCLA and other schools. He later moved into video games and returned to science fiction with recurring appearances on the 1990s series “Babylon 5.”

Tributes from the Enterprise crew

Castmate George Takei wrote on social media that his heart was heavy. “Walter was more than Chekov,” Takei said. “He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend.” Koenig served as best man at Takei’s 2008 wedding to Brad Altman.

McGinnis said Koenig’s legacy reached well beyond the screen through years of convention appearances. “He understood what Star Trek meant to people and embraced the community that grew around it,” he said.
