DALLAS, Nov. 1 (TodayViralUSA) — Four people were killed and about 15 others wounded in three shootings that erupted within roughly 75 minutes in Dallas’ Deep Ellum entertainment district early Sunday, the deadliest of a string of Halloween-weekend attacks that left crowded nightlife and party areas across the country under police tape.
Gunfire was also reported outside Birmingham’s Legion Field after one of the country’s biggest college football rivalries, in downtown Newark, Delaware, near the University of Delaware, and in several neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Taken together, the Associated Press counted at least six people dead and dozens injured in mass shootings at nightlife districts in about half a dozen cities.
Three scenes in three blocks
Dallas police said the first call came at about 12:19 a.m. from the 2600 block of Elm Street. A second shooting was reported just after 1 a.m. one block south, on Main Street, and a third at about 1:35 a.m. on South Crowdus Street, a short walk to the east.
Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said investigators had no information yet showing the shootings were connected but were still working to determine whether they were. He did not identify the victims or describe their conditions, and said the number of injured could rise as officers account for people who took themselves to hospitals. Officers revived one wounded person at the scene, he said.
“This is completely unacceptable for it to take place in Dallas, and we’re going to do everything that we need to do to get everyone in custody that’s responsible for this,” Comeaux told reporters.
The chief said at least one person had been arrested in connection with one of the incidents and that detectives were interviewing people in custody and witnesses. Police had not publicly named any suspects by Sunday afternoon, and The Dallas Morning News reported that the shooters remained at large. Comeaux said the department had stepped up its presence in Deep Ellum because Halloween fell on a Saturday, and that officers were nearby when the shooting began.
Birmingham: shots after the Magic City Classic
In Birmingham, Alabama, one person was killed and eight others were wounded shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday outside Legion Field, where crowds were still tailgating after Alabama A&M beat Alabama State 31-28 in the 85th Magic City Classic, the country’s largest rivalry between historically Black colleges. One victim was in critical condition and seven were stable, police said.
Police Chief Michael Pickett called the shootings “two senseless acts of violence.” One person was detained for questioning, but no arrests had been announced. Officers suspended all tailgating and ordered people off the stadium property, and the department asked anyone who recorded video to send it to investigators.
Delaware and Philadelphia
In Newark, Delaware, six people were shot on the south sidewalk of East Main Street at about 11:13 p.m. as Halloween celebrations filled the college town’s main strip, police said. All six were taken to hospitals; their conditions were not released. Police said there did not appear to be an ongoing threat, and the street reopened after about five hours. The Delaware News Journal said it was the city’s first shooting of the year.
In Philadelphia, separate Halloween-night shootings left two people dead, including a teenager, and two others injured, CBS Philadelphia reported.
The violence came hours after a shooting at a Spirit Halloween store in a Fairfield, California, mall left a pregnant woman dead and six people wounded.
