WASHINGTON, Oct. 28 (TodayViralUSA) — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has removed the Pentagon’s top military planner, Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, U.S. officials said Wednesday, extending a long run of senior officer dismissals at a moment when President Trump is weighing renewed strikes on Iran.
Sylvia served as director for strategy, plans and policy on the Joint Staff, the office known inside the military as the J-5. He was pushed out of the post earlier this week and has retired from the Army after 11 months in the job, according to two sources cited by ABC News.
No official reason has been given. One source told ABC News that Sylvia was removed because of a lack of confidence, though the same source said it was unclear whether the decision came from Hegseth or from Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to whom Sylvia reported.
A key planning office
The J-5 drafts long-range strategy, plans and policy recommendations for the Joint Chiefs chairman, who in turn advises the president and other national leaders. It is regarded, alongside the J-3 operations directorate, as one of the most important offices on the Joint Staff.
By midweek the Joint Staff website no longer listed Sylvia as director, naming only Vice Director Maj. Gen. Mark H. Slocum. A permanent successor has not been announced. Typically a deputy fills the role until the president nominates a replacement for Senate confirmation.
“The Chairman, the Joint Staff, and the Joint Force extend our deepest gratitude to Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia and his family for their 32 years of distinguished service to our nation,” a Joint Staff spokesperson said. Hegseth’s office referred questions to the Joint Staff.
Timing amid Iran planning
The removal comes as the administration considers new military action in the eight-month-old war with Iran. U.S. Central Command has drawn up attack plans that could be carried out after the Nov. 3 midterm elections if the White House authorizes them, The Hill has reported.
A pattern of dismissals
Sylvia, a former commander of the Army’s 101st Airborne Division, is the latest of more than two dozen senior officers fired or pushed out since Hegseth took over the Pentagon, moves that have drawn criticism from lawmakers in both parties. His predecessor in the J-5 role, Lt. Gen. Joseph McGee, was also sidelined and retired last October.
Earlier this month, Hegseth defended plans to cut up to 20% of the military’s generals and admirals, arguing the force is too “rank-heavy” and that added layers put distance between commanders and troops.
