ALBANY, N.Y., Nov. 3 (TodayViralUSA) — A child in upstate New York has died of measles, the state’s first known measles-associated death in more than 30 years, as an outbreak in rural, under-vaccinated communities continues to spread.
The New York State Department of Health and Lewis County Public Health announced the death on Monday in a joint statement. They did not release the child’s age, gender or hometown and asked that the family’s privacy be respected.
“Measles is a highly contagious disease that can cause serious complications and death. Vaccination is the best protection against measles,” the agencies said, urging residents to make sure they are up to date on the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. The state said it has offered Lewis County help with community outreach and local vaccination efforts.
Outbreak still growing
New York had recorded 178 measles cases this year as of Oct. 24, 170 outside New York City and eight in the city, state health officials said. That is up from 108 cases on Oct. 3, when Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a statewide disaster emergency that allowed paramedics, pharmacists and midwives to give MMR shots and let nurses order tests. That executive order is set to expire on Nov. 4 unless it is extended.
Lewis County’s records show all 15 of its confirmed cases were in unvaccinated people, local station WSYR reported. State guidance now recommends an early MMR dose for infants 6 months and older who live in communities with measles spread or who are traveling.
Worst national resurgence in decades
The death comes amid the country’s worst measles resurgence in decades. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention counted 4,852 confirmed cases nationwide as of Oct. 29, more than double the 2,289 cases reported in all of 2025, with 43 new outbreaks this year. Neighboring Pennsylvania has the largest outbreak, with at least 1,338 cases and five deaths as of late October, according to NPR.
Health officials note that vaccination coverage has slipped. CDC data show the share of U.S. kindergartners vaccinated against measles fell from 95% in the 2019 school year to 92% in 2025, below the 95% level considered necessary to prevent outbreaks.
