SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Seattle Seahawks smothered the New England Patriots with a relentless defense and a punishing running game on Sunday, winning Super Bowl LX 29-13 at Levi’s Stadium for the franchise’s second championship.
Running back Kenneth Walker III was named the game’s most valuable player after rushing for 135 yards on 27 carries and catching two passes for 26 yards. He became the first running back to win the award since Denver’s Terrell Davis in January 1998, and his rushing total was the highest in a Super Bowl since Davis ran for 157 yards in that game.
Defense Sets the Tone
Seattle’s defense harassed Patriots quarterback Drake Maye throughout the night, recording six sacks and forcing three turnovers, a fumble and two interceptions. Linebacker Uchenna Nwosu returned one interception 45 yards for a touchdown that effectively ended New England’s hopes of a comeback. The Patriots managed only five first downs through three quarters before scoring two late touchdowns with the game out of reach.
Seattle kicker Jason Myers set a Super Bowl record with five field goals. The Seahawks led 9-0 at halftime, with Walker accounting for 100 of the team’s 183 first-half yards, according to NFL.com.
Darnold Manages the Game
Quarterback Sam Darnold passed for 202 yards and one touchdown, avoiding mistakes while Walker carried the offense. Darnold, a journeyman who has played for several teams, credited his parents after the game for instilling the confidence that carried him through his career.
Walker took on a heavier workload in the playoffs after teammate Zach Charbonnet suffered a season-ending knee injury in the divisional round against San Francisco. A 49-yard touchdown run in the second half was called back for holding, denying him a score. Walker, who is set to become a free agent, said he was focused on the team rather than personal glory.
Macdonald Among Youngest Champions
Coach Mike Macdonald, 38, became the third-youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl. He told CNN the victory felt surreal and praised his players’ connection to one another.
Bad Bunny’s Halftime Show
Puerto Rican star Bad Bunny headlined the halftime show, performing many of his biggest hits with staging that drew heavily on imagery and symbols from his Spanish-language catalog. Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin made guest appearances. The performance came one week after Bad Bunny won album of the year at the Grammy Awards.
Patriots’ Turnaround Season Ends
For New England, the loss ended a resurgent season led by Maye, the young quarterback who helped return the franchise to the Super Bowl. The Patriots’ defense limited Seattle’s passing attack, holding Darnold to 5.0 yards per attempt, but could not contain Walker on the ground.
