MOSCOW, Oct. 2 (TodayViralUSA) — Organizers canceled two sold-out stadium concerts by U.S. rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, in St. Petersburg after weeks of political backlash and venue disputes, the promoter said, ending what would have been one of the largest appearances by a Western pop star in Russia since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Say Agency told followers on Telegram that the Oct. 10 and 11 shows at Gazprom Arena “will not be able to take place” on the scheduled dates. Tickets had already sold out for the dates, which were promoted as a rare major Western booking in Russia’s wartime entertainment market.
Russian officials had denounced the planned performances. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the concerts unacceptable, citing Ye’s past statements that Russian politicians described as glorifying Adolf Hitler. Lawmaker Nikolay Novichkov argued that the artist should face scrutiny and suggested any appearance should be conditioned on support for Russia’s war in Ukraine, according to reporting summarized by Paste Magazine and Anadolu Agency.
Venue friction and a wider chill
Gazprom Arena earlier said it had not formally leased the venue to promoters and could not host the events, even after tickets went on sale. The arena said it had received complaints about the booking and emphasized it was not responsible for the original announcement. That logistical standoff left the promoter and ticket holders in limbo before the final cancellation notice.
Western touring in Russia has largely collapsed since 2022 as sanctions, travel risks and reputational concerns kept major artists away. A Ye date would have tested whether controversy could override that chill. Instead, domestic political opposition and venue uncertainty shut the shows before opening night.
Ye has spent years in cycles of public controversy over antisemitic remarks, business collapses and erratic releases. The Russia dates were an outlier attempt to stage large outdoor-arena performances in a market most global acts now avoid. Local organizers framed the cancellation as regretful; critics in Russia framed it as necessary.
Refunds and any rescheduling were not detailed in the initial Telegram notice. For Russia’s live-music business, the episode underscores how state messaging, venue liability and artist reputation now intersect more tightly than before the war. For international promoters, it is another signal that high-profile Western bookings remain fragile even when demand appears strong on paper.
